An Inside Look Into Developing
the Fifth-Generation Camaro
Phase 1: The Team and Testing
As we continue to move forward, now is a great time to look back at some of the key milestones in the development of the highly anticipated fifth-generation Camaro.
Building the Right Team!
The key to developing a great vehicle is teamwork. We need very passionate people who will do whatever it takes to blend the right Powertrain & Chassis, Body & Interior, and HVAC & Electrical systems together with excellent Vehicle Performance & Integration. Our GM Engineering team in Melbourne, Australia is comprised of a bunch of "petrol heads" who live and breathe cars. We know we are "living the dream" developing this important automotive icon for Chevy. The engineers are working long hours and leveraging the time zones as they manage their work around the globe. We have already selected our Launch Team members to participate in the final phases of program execution at the assembly plant in Oshawa, Ontario. Additionally, we have decided to have three key members of our core engineering team move from Australia to Canada to ensure knowledge is transferred from development to the launch phase of the program. We have carefully selected our Program Engineering Manager, Interior Vehicle Systems Engineer, and the Body & Exterior Vehicle Systems Engineer to help lead the crucial final phases of the development process in 2008.

The Virtual World
In today's competitive auto industry, a tremendous amount of work is done virtually. The key to this activity is to create computer-generated models, perform subsystem and vehicle-level analysis work to ensure designs meet product requirements for strength and durability, as well as run simulated testing to ensure success. At GM these days, every product program is highly leveraging a new globally connected engineering enterprise. This organizational structure has been in place for the past 2-1/2 years and enables each member of the Camaro team to review their design work with GM experts in that specific area from all over the world. These "peer reviews" have been very helpful during our virtual phase to ensure we improve upon each subsequent design as quickly as possible BEFORE we enter the physical test and evaluation phase of development.
